To understand the need for bread machines without Teflon, we’ll begin with the basics. Non-stick cookware is popular because it uses less oil and you don’t have to worry about burning your food. It also means that most of your bread baking machines are also non-stick.

However, with recent studies, people finally started realizing how it is more harmful to us. As science went onto progress further, we found out that this famous non-stick cookware was lined with Teflon. Teflon is a brand of polytetrafluoroethylene; let’s stick to PTFE for now. So, this convenience came with a price.

The culinary world went into chaos because people didn’t want to put their lives at risk. They started looking for alternatives and frantically Googling to find cookware not lined with Teflon. Naturally, people also started asking if they could find bread machines not lined with this substance. To answer this burning question we decided to address it.

Much like any other invention when people realize years later how it’s harmful plastic, people started figuring out that this substance has adverse effects on human beings. Especially, if PTFE is heated over a specific temperature, it starts to break down, which then produces a harmful by-product gas by the name of perfluorooctanoic acid – short for PFOA.

After the experiments, it’s revealed that the gas increases the risk of liver, testicular, breast, and pancreatic cancer. This list is enough to send shivers down your spine.

So, if PTFE and heat are so aversive to one another, then why is nobody talking about this? Why aren’t there any measures to stop lining our cookware with this life-threatening substance? Would you really want to put your health at risk to save yourself the hassle of cleaning? Is it really worth it?

What does the American Cancer Society Say about Teflon?

According to the American Cancer Society, there are no known risks by using Teflon coated material. So, um… wait a minute, are you trying to say it’s not harmful? Well, to a certain degree, yes. This all must sound very confusing to you right now but let’s break this down for you.

Well, first, Teflon isn’t safe. The statement given out by the American Cancer Society is barely satisfying. Just because there are no known risks, we can’t eliminate the danger they pose. Even if people want to stay away from it what other alternatives do they have? There are hardly any machines in North America that are 100 percent PTFE free and safe. So how does one play safe?

Well, remember how if PTFE is cooked over a specific temperature, then it releases harmful gas? This happens when you continuously heat your cookware beyond 500 degrees Fahrenheit/260 degrees Celsius. So you have to make sure that your bread machine does not reach that limit. If it goes beyond that, the harmful toxin PFOA starts releasing in the air.

Luckily, traditionally bread bakes at lower temperatures already, somewhere around 300 degrees Fahrenheit/175 degrees Celsius or lower than this, which is way below the maximum limit. They use less heat because, in bread baking machines, the chamber is compact and closer together, so it requires less heat to cook as compared to a conventional oven.

Most machines even come with customizable temperatures so you can always keep it low.

So in comparison to other cookware where it is hard to keep track of the temperature, let’s say a pan, it’s easier to control that in a bread machine. Hence, practically you don’t have to fret too much regarding the dangerous gas released from the Teflon.

As compared to the cookware, you can control the temperature in these appliances. Hence, you don’t have to worry that much. They give you more control; allowing you to set not only the baking temperature but also the temperature range. Are there any bread machines without Teflon?
